Why should you take engagement photos?

Before I get into talking about the five ways on how you can rock your engagement session, it is important to first understand why you should take engagement photos. When you book your wedding photographer, there is a good chance they would recommend adding in an engagement session to your wedding photography package. Similar to the hair and make-up trails, the engagement session is most commonly used as a “trial run”. You may have seen your photographer’s amazing photos online but this is where you will be able to see how your photographer works and be able to connect with them.

Because most couples have never been in front of a camera before, connecting with your photographer will help you feel more natural and relaxed in front of the camera on your wedding day. Your photographer will be able to know what poses you might like or don’t like which can help streamline your portrait session on the wedding day.

Not only will you get to know your photographer prior to your wedding day, you will also have professional stunning photos which can be used for save the dates, the wedding website, your social media pages, or even displaying them at your wedding!

1. Wear something that you are comfortable in.

If you wearing something you are not comfortable in, you will not be comfortable throughout your engagement session. You should be able to feel relaxed and enjoy your engagement session. I usually tell my couples to dress to impress and wear something that they LOVE! Remember, the engagement photos reflect your personalities and you should feel like yourselves! Wearing something that you are comfortable in will make you feel confident throughout the entire session and this is the first step to rock your engagement session!

Tip: Avoid wearing clothes that have large logos, crazy design patterns, or anything too trendy (trends come and go, these images aren’t just for today but also for the years to come). Also avoid wearing anything that is too casual. These are the photos that you will want to look your best in and they will most likely be displayed on your wedding website. There is a time and place for casual/activewear, just not the engagement session.

2. Consider bringing props!

Bringing props to your engagement session will help create more creative photos! I usually ask my couples to bring something that reflects their personalities such as something they enjoy doing together or like. After all, what would be a better way to capture the best moments from your engagement session, it is about YOU!

3. Location. Location. Location!

Plan ahead and research locations that you absolutely love! You should consider picking a location that not only has a beautiful backdrop but also has significant meaning to you. This would make your photos stand out more than just picking a random location in town.

4. Location. Location. Location!

5. Have fun!
