My Sony Alpha Experience
I have always been a long time Canon shooter for my wedding photography work until I started hearing about the Sony Alpha system. Ever since I started using Sony, I have had some friends ask me why I got rid of my Canon gear and fully switched to the Sony Alpha system. So now I have decided to share my experiences using the Sony Alpha system.
To answer the questions on why I have switched to the Sony Alpha system from my beloved Canon DSLR, I can say that there are two reasons. The size of the mirrorless cameras and the electronic viewfinder.
SIZE
The size of the Sony mirrorless cameras was a huge turning point in my wedding photography career. The smaller form factor of the mirrorless cameras allows me to capture candid moments as if I am not even there. In other words, it allows me to take photos without being a distraction in front of my clients. Instead of having my big Canon 5D Mark iii, I am now using a Sony a7R II which is about half the size. For me personally, I want to keep myself as small as possible without drawing much attention. Having my clients go on throughout the day as if I am not there allows me to capture those REAL candid moments.
The photo below was taken just before the wedding ceremony when the bride had a moment to share with her parents. On top of keeping myself small with the mirrorless cameras, having the silent shutter feature on the Sony a7R II enabled me to capture timeless moments without drawing any kind of attention from myself. By the way, the silent shutter on the Sony mirrorless camera is 100% SILENT!
ELECTRONIC VIEWFINDER (EVF)
There have been a discussion about electronic viewfinders in professional cameras and how they are not as good as the optical viewfinder (OVF). For my wedding photography career, the electronic viewfinder has been a huge advantage. The EVF allows me to see how the photo will come out before I take the image. I can see all of the real time changes that are being done before I hit the shutter. This means no more "test shots"!
A lot of people may say that the electronic viewfinder is a disadvantage but for my work and what I do, I cannot imagine going back to an optical viewfinder.
The photo below happened very quickly and with an electronic viewfinder I can be ready to take the photo without any test shots! I also want to point out that the low light focusing on the a7S II goes all the way down to -4EV which allows me to capture those photos (like the one below) in the dark and with the help from the high ISO performance I can achieve clean images.
I want to tell everyone that in the end any camera, no matter what brand, can take great images. But for me, the Sony Alpha system fits my style of photography and allows me to create the timeless wedding images at ease.
